Brandish

A real-world GPS action RPG that turns the places around you into a living fantasy game world.

Brandish

Brandish is an Android-first GPS action RPG built around a simple idea: what if going outside actually felt like stepping into an RPG?
The real world becomes the game map. Players explore their surroundings, discover creatures and resources, encounter events, complete quests, and develop their characters as they move through the world around them. But Brandish isn't meant to be a map with icons that you occasionally tap. I've been building it around physical interaction with the phone itself.
Combat uses the sensors already inside a modern smartphone to turn movement, timing, reaction, and coordination into game mechanics. Different challenges can ask the player to swing, block, aim, react, maintain control, or perform other physical actions, with the goal of making an encounter feel more like doing something than pressing an attack button until a health bar disappears.
Underneath that is a larger simulated fantasy world. Real-world map data helps shape the environment, while game systems determine things like biomes, resources, monsters, encounters, factions, quests, and how areas change as players interact with them. Character creation, equipment, classes, familiars, dialogue, exploration, combat, crafting, and progression are all being designed as parts of the same world rather than isolated minigames.
Brandish is also an enormous art and design project. I'm creating its pixel art, interface, animation systems, characters, monsters, writing, game mechanics, backend services, world-generation systems, and Android client as a solo developer.
It's easily one of the largest things I've ever attempted to build, which is exactly why I keep working on it.
Brandish is currently in active development.
